The current Alfa Romeo 159 is a bit of a Jekyll-and-Hyde affair. Unspeakably gorgeous on the one hand, its aging, Saab-based platform means its dynamic performance doesn't come anywhere close to cashing the checks its aggressive styling writes out. So those enamored of its design will be happy, but those disappointed by its drive will be disappointed, to learn that the 159's replacement has reportedly been pushed back until 2012, thereby giving the current model a little longer to live. This, according to Alfa's new boss Sergio Cravero – recently promoted after years as communications director following Luca de Meo's departure – in an interview with Italian daily La Stampa. The statement contradicts previous reports that the new sedan, dubbed Giulia in revival of the classic nameplate, was being rushed into development in light the current model's poor sales. Sources suggest – and by sources, we mean our own speculation – that the program has been postponed so that it can be integrated with a Chrysler platform, and could, like the replacement for the 166, be built in North America. The 2012 Alfa Romeo Giulia will be built on an entirely distinct platform called C-Evoluzione, the new chassis will feature a longer wheelbase that will make for more aerodynamic shorter overhangs and will be suspended by a new, more sophisticated suspension. The exterior of the future Giulia is heavily inspired by the new Alfa Romeo MiTo, and just like the compact city car, the 159 replacement will be front wheel drive. However the top of the line Giulia will be offered with a much sportier all wheel drive system, and as an option Alfa Romeo will offer their stability enhancing Active Roll Control system. The future Giulia will be powered by a range of new engines, including a gas burning 1.75 Liter turbocharged unit making 200 HP and the all new 1.4 Liter Multiair power plant pumping out anywhere from 150 HP to 170 HP. As far as alternatively fueled options go, Alfa will offer a diesel burning 2.0 Liter JTDM engine making 170 HP as well as a 1.9 Liter TwinTurbo unit cranking out 190 HP A leaked internal document has revealed full details on Alfa Romeo’s future model line-up. Things will start off rather quiet for the next year or so, but in 2013 the company will come out guns blazing with a long list of models. At the start of 2013, Alfa Romeo will be unveiling an updated MiTo, followed by a five-door version of the same car. These two models will be followed with the highly anticipated production version of the 4C GTA concept unveiled earlier this year. Model year 2013 will end with the debut of the long-rumored SUV - a model that promises to combine "typical SUV versatility with true Alfa Romeo performance." The following year, 2014, will also keep the Italian company busy starting with the unveiling of the new Giulia in both sedan and station wagon versions. The second act in 2014 will be a new Spider model, followed by a luxury flagship and an updated version of the Giulietta. fans in the US have a lot to be excited about because the long-awaited return of the Italian brand in American soil is drawing closer and closer. Now, according to Autobild, the stage for Alfa’s return to America could take place at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Autobild is also reporting that Alfa Romeo is intent on bringing at least five models to the 2013 NAIAS, highlighted by the drop-dead gorgeous 4C GTA Concept. Together with the 4C GTA, other Alfa Romeo models expected to join in the US invasion include the Giulia, the Giulietta, the five-door MiTo, and a still unidentified Jeep-based crossover. We’ve all anxiously waited a long time for Alfa Romeo to return to our neck of the woods and it certainly hasn’t come with some impatience. But now that it’s beginning to look like the Italian brand is in fact US-bound after years and years of absence, that impatience and anxiety is slowly becoming excitement and eager anticipation. is gearing up for the release of its latest baby, the Giulia. It’s a long time coming considering rumors on the car have been around for quite some time now. But in the classic case of ‘better late than never’, the new Giulia, which is expected to hit the production line at the tail end of 2012, is now further along in its development. This poses as great news for fans of the Italian marquee while on the flip side, the sports sedan’s forthcoming release should be a cause for concern from some of its German rivals, particularly BMW and Audi. For a brand that has seen its recent struggles, Fiat is hoping that Alfa Romeo’s new Giulia sports sedan will be the car that will help the Italian brand recover its place in the auto industry. It’s a tall order for a sports sedan given the stiff competition it’s going to face in the market once it’s released, but nevertheless, Alfa Romeo is confident that they have found the car that will lead them back to prominence in the 2012 Giulia. First it was the Alfa Romeo 156, next came the Alfa Romeo 159, and now plans for the Alfa Romeo Giulia are full speed ahead. Based on a longer and wider platform than the 159, the Giulia will have a McPherson front axle with a twin-link rear suspension and will feature the new Multiair V6 engines. This engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and will produce up to 300bhp. The vehicle will come as a front wheel drive, but will have the platform to support four wheel drive. We are happy to hear that the Giulia will not come in a hatchback like its brothers, the MiTo and Milano. We are not big fans of hatchbacks and we can safely say that neither are most Americans considering Alfa Romeo’s decision to not offer the MiTo and Milano in the US. Instead Alfa Romeo has decided to make its US comeback with the Alfa Romeo Giulia being offered as a four-door saloon and a five-door sport wagon. Renderings, like the one shown above, show a more rounded, modern shape to the new Giulia as opposed to the boxier shapes of the previous Giulia models. The Alfa Romeo Giulia will be introduced to European markets in 2011 with an American debut in 2012. Alfa Romeo has plans to sell 100,000 units per year and is even considering a lightweight Q2 350bhp Autodelta edition.
