Programmer Analyst @ Yale University - New Haven, CT

General Purpose
Under the general direction of the Director of Informatics and ITS Manager, work with Informatics and ITS staff to develop and support new and existing applications. The main focus is on the Tissue Microarray Database and applications that are functionally related to it. Perform a combination of software application and database development.

Essential Duties
1. Research, analyze and evaluate complex technical problems and determine and implement appropriate solutions. 2. Participate in all stages of system development cycle from analysis to coding and documenting. 3. Interact with Informatics programmer, researchers and ITS staff to assess needs, propose solutions and to develop and deploy information technology based solution. 4. Be involved in user training. 5. Participate in refactoring and expansion of existing applications; perform various coding, debugging and unit testing tasks in support of assigned project; provide support for training of end users as necessary; investigate different software and technical research tools to determine general strengths/weaknesses relative to research issues. 6. Serve as a primary contact for any issues surrounding installation and operation of client/server applications and act as liaison with institutional IT support. 7. Perform other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate by the informatics core director.

Education & Experience
1. Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area and five years of programming experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Education & Experience
1. Experience in programming and software engineering; extensive experience with Java programming language with specific knowledge of Hibernate and Spring frameworks.2. Strong experience with Web development and AJAX technologies (in particular with GWT).3. Strong experience with Tomcat server.4. Extensive experience with management of relational database systems and MySQLin particular.5. Experience with OS X and Linux system administration.6. Familiarity with Rapid Application Development methodologies and proven track record of success.7. Preferred: Master’s Degree in Computer Science; experience with clinical and biomedical informatics applications; experience with general web architecture, from the server to browser; version control systems CVS and SVN; familiarity with UML; good understanding of OOP principles.

1. Strong experience with relational databases 2. Strong programming experience with Java/Javascript;Strong understanding of object-oriented methodology. 3. Strong experience with Hibernate and Spring frameworks. 4. Web application development, knowledge of Tomcat, JSP and Servlet technology. 5. Web interface development with GWT, JavaScript, DHTML and CSS. 6. Familiarity with standard Java Java tools such as JUnit and Ant; 7. Familiarity with UML. 8. Well developed analytical and problem solving skills. 9. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression. 10. Skill at managing a team. 11. Excellent planning and organizational skills. 12. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative to manage and prioritize a wide variety of complex tasks. 13. Good troubleshooting and interpersonal skills, with ability to work as member of a team.
