The Internet can be a wonderful experience or a potential dangerous experience for children. There are thousands of beneficial websites for children to utilize online such as library research and knowledgeable information to help them with their schoolwork, fun games etc.. The opportunities for children to create their own personal site and then join in on different groups or discussions can be a wonderful experience or it can subject your child to sexual predators.
The National Center For Explicit And Exploited Children provided the following statistics that will frighten you.
1 in 7 children who use the Internet regularly is sexually solicited
31 % are asked to meet with the on-line user
56% of the children do not tell anyone
While there are many concerns you may have about your child & the Internet, one of the main concerns you should have is how much personal information your child gives about him or herself. Giving too much information allows online predators detailed information about your child such as when they get home from school, their address, or where they go.
What can you do to keep your child safe?
1. You can install filter software such as Norton Internet Security or monitoring software such as Child Safe for added protection.
2. Set limits and talk to your children about the potential dangers in cyberspace.
3. Talk to your children about how important it is to never give personal information on the Internet unless you give them permission.
Whether you think your child is involved in good or bad activity online it's important to talk to them, know how they use the computer and set guidelines.
As parents we naturally tell our children to “Be careful when riding your back or you could hurt” or “Make sure you look both ways before crossing the street”. The same common sense applies to children and cyberspace.
