Newsweek Blogger Allison Samuels has written a pretty interesting post on Angelina Zolie’s hair combing practices of her daughter Zahara. True, I have often commented on Zahara’s hair and what a long way a little hair grease goes (if they would just use it). I didn’t think that this topic would end up in Newsweek, but it has and it is an interesting read. Ms Samuels starts off complimenting the effort that Angelina has shown in the past: Up until recently, Angelina Jolie seemed to be doing a pretty decent job with Zahara Jolie Pitt—providing essential and expensive medical care, purchasing land in Zahara’s ... Ahh, black hair. Why there is so much pain and frustration surrounding not just how a black woman chooses to wear her hair, but how other's perceive us because of our hair, it really makes me wonder about human beings. I'm not being dismissive, because I have to check myself from judging others everyday. After putting in a weave earlier this year and taking it out a few months later, I have realized how much how you wear your hair really says to the outside world. You might dismiss it, declaring 'It's my choice' and yes, it is, and no you shouldn't care what other's think. But ... Read Full Story

Allison Samuels over at Newsweek apparently has nothing else better to do with her time but wage war on Zahara Jolie Pitt's NATURAL hair, as glorious as it is. I thought long and hard before sitting down two weeks ago to write an article about the state of Zahara Jolie-Pitt's hair. I knew any discussion about hair and culture would spark an angry debate in the world of bloggers and beyond. Just ask Chris Rock. His new film, Good Hair, has brought him all kinds of criticism and drama, so at least I'm in good company. Days after my story hit the Web, the ... Read Full Story

In the aftermath of Allison Samuels' controversial article in Newsweek, Zahara Jolie Pitt and the Politics of Uncombed Hair, Newsweek asked three bloggers, including yours truly, to write a response to the article and Samuels' rebuttal to the criticism. I gave my response the title Are We All Really "Team Zahara?" but I am fine with how Newsweek printed it: Nichelle Gainer: It's Time To Fully Embrace Natural Hair. I am also happy to see that...

I've been a fan of Allison Samuels' work for some time. But I cannot get behind her strange, continued appeals to actress Angelina Jolie about her adopted daughter Zahara's hair. She is, quite simply, missing the point. The first go-round was bad enough. Today, Samuels posts a follow-up piece rehashing the same points with a supposedly damning photo of Zahara's hair. Newsflash: that's what natural hair looks like with a wash and go. That's...

Was it really necessary to write an entire article in Newsweek about Zahara Jolie-Pitt's hair? Um, no... “I disagree with the conclusion of that Newsweek article: “…there will come a day when this beautiful little African girl will understand what it means to be an African American woman in this society and realize unlike her younger sister, hers is not a wash-and-go world.” That sentence revealed more about the author than she may have...
