Australian Open: 10 minutes with ... the Bondarenko sisters

Bondarenko sisters

Q: You’ve both come back from your end-of-year vacation; did you go on the same holiday, or did you take separate ones?

Kateryna Bondarenko (KB): It depends. One year ago, we both went to Rio De Janeiro, but last year, we didn’t spend the time together. I went to Moscow.

Alona Bondarenko (AB): And I stayed at home.

Q: What was the last movie that you two saw together?

AB: We always watch movies together. We were watching the Sex and The City episodes, and before that, we watched all the Russian movies we brought with us. And lots of DVDs.

Q: Do you keep in contact via phone much on the tour?

KB: We live together, so we don’t need to do too much of that.

Q: Do you ever get sick of one another?

Both: Sometimes. (Both laugh).

Q: What do you get sick of the most?

AB: I don’t know. Something small. A bad mood might be enough. Nothing special.

Q: What’s the nicest thing about living together and being around one another?

KB: Alona cooking for me. (Both laugh).

Q: You’re not a very good cook, Kateryna?

KB: No.

Q: What do you like to cook, Alona?

AB: Everything. Just for dinner and lunch. Anything that we ask for.

Q: What would have liked to have been if you weren’t tennis players?

AB: I want to be a movie star.

Q: In a big Hollywood film?

AB: Maybe.

Q: And what about you, Kateryna?

KB: Well, I don’t know, a big lawyer.

Q: What do you argue about the most?

KB: We argue more on the court, but not that much off the court.

Q: Who has the better serve?

AB: Kateryna.

Q: Better volley?

KB: Alona.

Q: Who gets more nervous before a match?

AB: It always depends. You never know. On match point, Katya plays better, but during the match … I don’t know.

Q: You’ve obviously been to Melbourne a few times, what do you like about our city?

AB: Everything.

KB: Yeah, but we still want to go to the zoo. We also want to see the penguins.

Q: Anything else you want to do whilst you are in Melbourne?

KB: Not really; our favourite thing is to shop, but we have too much stuff already.

Q: Which tennis players do you like to watch and why?

AB: Roger Federer. He plays really well. He enjoys his tennis. You can see that when he plays.

KB: We also like watching any Russian girls. It’s always interesting to cheer for somebody that you know.
