Mel South scares top seed Alona

The script was familiar - English girl loses in first round at Wimbledon - but everyone who saw the British number three take on the number 28 seed knew this was a display of belting baseline tennis and power serving.

The 22-year-old Mel South finally went down valiantly to the heavily strapped  Alona Bondarenko 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

South went two breaks of service down in the third set, then broke Bondarenko to love and saved three match points in the last game before finally succumbing.
