I have a dozen small sites that use around 10gb of bandwidth and 7gb of storage. The sites don't receive enough traffic to warrant a dedicated database server, but a small Amazon EC2 instance should cover it perfectly. I'm not intimately familiar with all that Amazon has to offer, and could definitely use some advice in coming up with a cost efficient solution. Does it make sense to use S3 to host all my static files? What can I do to prevent data loss in case the instance is powered off? Can I use EBS Volumes to store backups, or is it better to ... Cloud hosting, storage & content delivery networks (CDNs) are very popular services for the last few years, which is very normal, as they offer a series of advantages in running + serving web applications. An application hosted in the cloud will: easily scale (with instantly deployable & API controlled instances, unlimited diskspaces, etc..) serve files faster with content delivery network (CDN) support have a better availability (with strong SLAs) With the increasing number of providers & tools created, cloud hosting is getting simpler & simpler everyday. Getting in the cloud, in most cases, will save so much time & resources when running a growing web ... Read Full Story

Amazon announced today that it is bridging two of its web computing services , EC2 and S3 , with Hadoop , an open-source project that brings the same distributed data processing power as Google's MapReduce. In fact, it is calling the new service Amazon Elastic MapReduce . The new service will allow its EC2 customers to perform distributed MapReduce queries on enormous datasets stored in S3, paying only for the computation time they need. Sponsor Hadoop has been an open-source project in the making for the last few years, inspired by Google's white paper on its version of MapReduce. The technology is an almost ... Read Full Story
