How big is Amazon Web Services? Bigger than a billion

By oliver18754 on  From webdev101.tk
If you parse Amazon’s first quarter earnings, you could be forgiven for thinking that Amazon Web Services is now a $2 billion-a-year business. That’s because Amazon’s revenue from the “other” category for the quarter ending March 31, 2012 was $500 million, up from $311 million for the year-ago period. If you assume “other” is AWS only, that’s a $2 billion-a-year run rate for 2012. Now, before we go crazy, the “other” category includes, as an Amazon spokeswoman put it “non-retail activities...Read Full Story

Amazon, Eucalyptus team up for just don’t call it a hybrid cloud

By oliver18754 on  From webdev101.tk
On paper it looks like one of those strategic agreements that large companies sign with small startups. But if you look close enough, you will find that by forging a partnership with information as a service (IaaS) provider, Eucalyptus Systems, Amazon.com’s web services division is making a masterful move to dominate the cloud market. Google to Amazon: You’re not the only price chopper around

By oliver18754 on  From webdev101.tk
Amazon isn’t the only cloud provider slicing storage prices. Google on Tuesday cut the price on Google Cloud Storage by up to 15 percent in some cases. With this move, and the naming of five new front-end storage partners, Google appears to be making a serious play for the enterprise storage business from which it has been largely absent. In that arena it will square off with — you got it — Amazon Web Services, which last month cut its S3 storage prices, and on Monday discounted Elastic...Read Full Story

Amazon S3: 905 Billion Objects Stored, 1 Billion Added Each Day

By oliver18754 on  From webdev101.tk
Amazon has released some fairly impressive numbers showcasing the growth of Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) over the years. By the end of the first quarter of 2012, there were 905 billion objects stored, and the service routinely handles 650,000 requests per second for those objects, with peaks that go even higher. To put that in perspective, that’s up from 262 billion objects stored just two years ago and up from 762 billion by Q4 2011. Or maybe it’s more impressive when you look further...Read Full Story
