If you parse Amazon’s first quarter earnings, you could be forgiven for thinking that Amazon Web Services is now a $2 billion-a-year business. That’s because Amazon’s revenue from the “other” category for the quarter ending March 31, 2012 was $500 million, up from $311 million for the year-ago period. Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) has posted incredible gains for the first quarter of 2012, with the company now storing 905 billion objects, the company announced today on its AWS blog. The S3 service is used by tons of developers and engineers for scalable and relatively cheap cloud-based infrastructure. Amazon previously announced that the service had a 192 percent increase in objects stored year-over-year from 2010 to 2011. Amazon has released some fairly impressive numbers showcasing the growth of Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) over the years. By the end of the first quarter of 2012, there were 905 billion objects stored, and the service routinely handles 650,000 requests per second for those objects, with peaks that go even higher.
