Great news for those of you who are avid Kindle users. You can now select blog posts of mine if you should want to read them on your Kindle device. I know this is beneficial for those of you who think posts of mine are too long to read in one sitting. On my more spiritual blog posts I aim for an average of 1500 words and maximum of 2000 words and if it gets longer, split them into a series of posts.
This is not the same as using an RSS feed on your Kindle device, but thanks to a really handy WordPress plugin, called “Kindle This” which you can get from Keith Graham this link here. For bloggers this is a simple plugin, just download and install it, and you can place a widget anywhere on your sidebar(s). I’ve placed mine directly underneath my social media information towards the top. This doesn’t allow a user to subscribe to your blog’s feed on their device, but if they are reading it they can choose to input their email and kindle ID and a few moments later, as soon as it’s been processed and turned into a Kindle file, it appears on your device as soon as you have a WiFi connection.
This is beneficial to bloggers using the WordPress platform, as providing a variety of ways for the reader to obtain and interact with your content is crucial, as many have different preferred ways of reading their favorite blogs. With the proliferation of e-readers, this method is worth integrating into your site. If and when I find a better option I’ll use it, but this is the only easy to use one I’ve come across so far.
For Kindle users who are blog readers, if you just got your device or are fairly new to using it and don’t know what your kindle e-mail address is, just sign into your Amazon account, and click on ‘manage account’ in the upper right hand corner. If it makes you sign in, then do so and check to see your account info and you will find it there in ‘manage your devices.’ I noticed that when I tested this on my blog posts, the blog and page entries did not show up in my Amazon account, but instead were directly on my e-reader.
There’s still some things I’m working on, like how to make the title show up nicer as it seems to pull and maybe interacting with the plugin’s creator will help me solve this, but it’s not a major issue.
Since I am currently writing and have three potential manuscripts on the go, I though I’d test drive how my writings look in this format on the device, since it’s the e-reader I also use.
So if you like reading on Kindle, and my posts sometimes are too long for you, you know have an option for further offline reading later.
Enjoy!
In related news, Borders bookstore chain goes bust. A sign of the direction of more and more readers going towards e-readers? I think so!
