John Albert Gardner, the 30-year-old sex offender charged with 17-year-old
Chelsea King's rape and murder, will not have his preliminary trial until August now, following a short appearance in court today.

SDNN.com, Gardner, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was originally supposed to appear in court March 18.

Apparently the public defender representing Gardner in San Diego asked that the case be pushed back until September because he had not yet received police reports, and the complex case will need "extensive work." The Deputy DA asked the prelim to be held in July.
The judge set the August 4 date as a compromise between the two lawyers. A trial judge has not yet been assigned to the case.
The discovery of 14-year-old
Amber Dubois' body this weekend could possibly also bring new material to the case against Gardner, as police confirmed recently that he is the main focus of the investigation of her murder as well.
