Yesterday, Mets reliever Ambiorix Burgos was being sought by authorities after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run accident in the Dominican Republic that killed two people. Burgos was driving in Nagua, a town outside of Santo Domingo, when he hit Josefina Minaya Martnez, 38, and Angely Faa, 29, with his Hummer. The Mets released this statement... Well that took long enough. Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos decided to turn himself in to police in the Dominican Republic who've been looking for him since last week's alleged hit and murder of two women in the Dominican Republic. But as new information leaks out, we get this new tidbit as to the motive behind him allegedly killing those women (yeah, we're getting all Law And Order up in here). Prosecutors say former New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos (am-bee-OR'-iks BUR'-gos) has been sentenced to nine months in jail for throwing his girlfriend against a wall and pummeling her in a hotel near Shea Stadium. The 24-year-old reliever was sentenced Tuesday. A jury convicted him last month of assault in the Sept. 8 attack. Defense lawyer Edgar De Leon didn't immediately return a telephone message Tuesday evening. Former New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos (am-bee-OR'-iks BUR'-gos) has been convicted of throwing his girlfriend against a wall and punching her in a motel. Prosecutors say a jury on Thursday convicted the 24-year-old Burgos of assaulting the woman in September 2008. He faces up to a year in jail when he is sentenced April 3. District Attorney Richard Brown's office says Burgos threw his then-girlfriend against a wall and repeatedly punched and slapped her when she tried to leave. A couple of pitching names to watch in the Mets New York Mets ' system for the stretch run: Ambiorix Burgos Ambiorix Burgos and Robert Parnell. Burgos (pictured) continued his comeback from last year's Tommy John surgery by throwing one scoreless inning today for the Gulf Coast Mets. Burgos is famous for his 100 mph fastball and for having nearly $300,000 in jewelry briefly stolen from his hotel room in spring training this year. Parnell, meanwhile, was promoted to Triple-A New Orleans after compiling a 10-6 record and 4.30 ERA in 24 starts for Double-A Binghamton. Read Full Story
