A Second Try at 2009 Ausie Open – Amelie Mauresmo

Following a rather frustrating year, included back to back losses to a 19 year old Dominika Cibulkova some time in September. Amelie Mauresmo, the previous Number 1 player in the world is placed to make a make a comeback. She has been overwhelmed by irritating injuries and a cruel case of low esteem. She has managed to pull out of the Fed Cup and parted company with longtime associates Loic Courteau and Michel Franco, in an effort to renew the competitive flame within her that has come close to being extinct. She will play in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow on October 4th, where all the top players will be participating, and then 2 more tournaments in Europe earlier than the period ends.

The winner of two Grand Slam events, The Australian open and Wimbledon in 2004, Amelie rose to the number one ranked player in the world and has earned close to $14 million in award money. She has won over 24 Singles titles. Her method of play is exceptional among today’s women players, and she is truly missed around the courts. She plays with elegance and dignity that is suggestive of her idol Stefan Edberg, and when she is well and executing her shots with accuracy she is hard to beat. Her serve and volley format presents a challenge to the new crop of youthful players who have never experienced a player with this approach. It is quite unique to see and witness, something different from the usual and something that is hers.

Regrettably for Amelie if her game is not quite up to same level she leaves herself wide open to passing shots from the contrasting base line. Maybe she will get her game simultaneously to make a run at another Grand Slam name in January at the Australian open 2009. Hopefully in her 2nd chance at that, she will get it right this time.

Amelie is something of a wine connoisseur and is proud of her widespread red wine collection. She was lately asked what she intended to do when she finally hangs up her tennis shoes, she answered, “I plan to open a Sports Bar in Paris. I would like to be a bartender just like Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail, the problem is I would probably spill more than I poured in the glasses.” There is no finish to Amelie’s happiness, she admits to being obsessed to surfing, driving speedy sports cars, and hanging out with her friends. She hates to get up early in the morning and listening to long messages on her voice mail. She is occupied with the Curie Cancer Institute, and helps unfortunate children to learn sports. For many years, when she was at the peak of her profession, hers was a household name in France, the only lady player from France to ever attain the Number 1 position in the world, and even though she may never get back that place she would like to have at least one more triumphant season.
