Bob Bauman and a 16-Year-Old Male Prostitute

You just can't dress up the details of the Bob Bauman case.

The Republican representative from Maryland was arrested Oct. 3, 1980, for soliciting sex from a 16-year-old male prostitute. The arrest came in the midst of Bauman's reelection campaign, occurring after the deadline for withdrawal from the contest, and thus handing the election to Democrat Roy Dyson, who hadn't stood a chance before Bauman's arrest.

Despite the arrest, Bauman went on to try and win his party's nomination in 1982, but dropped out of the contest before the primary elections were held. Bauman later wrote a book that detailed his closeted gay life in Washington, D.C., called The Gentleman from Maryland. In it he describes the deep sense of guilt that came along with his homosexual activities.
For a time I rented a room from Joe’s mother and it was not just this proximity to Joe and his merry band that produced urgings of interest in me. There were momentary relationships with some of the young men I met at Joe’s house, mostly my own age, but they never lasted more than an hour or two. No attempt was made to really know the person except in the most superficial way. Once the encounter ended we parted quickly to avoid the implications of what we did. I am sure many of the young men were as convinced as I that this was only a passing phase. Each time I would feel great guilt and head for Saturday confession at St. Peter’s or St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill so I could make amends with God and be in the state of grace for Sunday Communion. I would always vow to myself and God I would never do it again. Sometimes my vow would last for weeks or even months.
Bauman ultimately left politics for good and now writes books about offshore banking and the creation of tax havens. He is currently the legal counsel for Sovereign Society , a group that works at creating such tax havens.
