Gary Condit Damn Near Charged With Murder

Police now believe they've found Chandra Levy's killer. Ingmar Guandique is currently awaiting trial for the 2001 murder.

But when the case first broke, a LOT of people figured former congressman Gary Condit (D-CA) was the culprit. In a particularly dark political scandal, Condit made a series of missteps that almost got him charged with the 23-year-old DC intern's murder.

First, he lied about it all to police. When Levy disappeared in the spring of 2001, police were soon led to Condit, who denied ever having an affair with her. The truth was soon revealed by Levy's aunt, who told investigators all about the affair. Condit's attempt to protect his reputation made him a prime suspect in the eyes of not only Levy's family, but also the public at large.

Even worse, Condit agreed to let investigators search his apartment, but just hours before the search he was caught throwing away a gift box he had received from another woman in a dumpster.

Condit further fostered suspicion when he wouldn't answer Connie Chung's questions on the subject on August 23. Even though investigations revealed that Condit was probably not the culprit, many still had suspicions. Not surprisingly, the congressman lost his seat in the primaries the following March. US Attorney General Dick Thornburgh described the situation aptly:

"Sooner or later, the truth is going to come out," he said. "And I think unfortunately all Congressman Condit has done here is create an impression that he is unwilling to cooperate with authorities, which in turn, leads to a suspicion of some kind of culpability."
