How to fight the Winter Blues Going Walking

Article by Robert W. Benjamin

A lot of people hate the long cold winter months because they say they cannot enjoy one of their favorite spring and summer activities, which is walking. I want to say right away, this is crap, there is no reason you cannot walk in the winter just as much as you do at any other time of the year. There probably are two main reasons why you think you cannot go walking in the winter, and I bet they are the cold, and the slippery road edges.

I want to tell you that I am over 50 years old and I walked almost every day last winter. I love the cold crisp winter air and enjoy the beauty of the snow. Now I admit when it’s 10 degrees above zero and the wind is blowing hard, that makes walking pretty difficult, but I still do it. I figure that not walking because it’s too cold is being lazy, but that is just my feelings. I put on my sweater, coat, hat and gloves and head out the door. I try to walk 6 miles a day on average, some days I walk a little more, some a little less.

I only walk a mile at a time, then I come back inside to warm up and rest a little, before heading back out to walk another mile. Another reason I only walk a mile at a time is because I have very bad arches and flat feet which make walking painful. Even though I have feet that get very sore, I do not let this stop me from enjoying the benefits and enjoyment of walking in the winter.

So let me tell you some options about walking in the winter time, you can bundle up and get outside and walk in the bitter cold and enjoy it, like I do. Or you can still get all your walking done inside where it’s nice and warm for you. You can simply walk around each room of your apartment or house, and you can measure the distance so you will know how many laps through the area it takes for you to go a mile, or however far you wish to walk, this is a great option for those that do not want to go outside and walk in the winter months.

If your apartment or house is just too small or cluttered to do much walking in, you can simply get a treadmill and walk until your hearts content. Treadmills have dropped a lot in price, I was pricing them at kmart and walmart and you can now buy some great models for under 0. These low priced treadmills not only tell you how fast your walking or running, but how far you have traveled. Running is another benefit of getting a treadmill, besides doing all the walking you want, inside where it’s nice and warm, you can run too if you wish.

So, if your always saying you hate the cold winter months because you must fight the winter blues, because you cannot go walking, you now cannot truthfully say that as I have described three ways you can go walking in the winter.

There is a website that describes numerous activities and other methods to help eliminate the Winter Blues, this website is called: Winter Activities – and it may be found at this url: http://www.winter-activities.com
