Amory Lovins in the chairman and chief scientist at the Rocky Mountain Institute. He describes the Rocky Mountain Institute as a "think and do tank". Amory Lovins has written several books including Winning the Oil Game. He is best known for his work on sustainability in building design and transportation.

Amory Lovins at Stanford University



Amory Lovins is temporarily at Stanford University, teaching classes and giving lectures on sustainability. He recently gave a series of public lectures as part of Stanford's Public Lecture Series titled "Advanced Energy Efficiency: Concepts and Practice".

I was able to attend the first session in this lecture series. Amory discussed the inefficiency of buildings (focused mostly on the US market). he explained that buildings consume 40% of all carbon-based energy use - far more than automobiles.

The core thesis for his speach was that buildings can be made significantly more efficient if designed as an entire system, instead of designing each component seperately (solar panels, HVAC, windows, insullation, etc). His example involved a property that was able to install a smaller and therefore cheaper HVAC system because of the effects of better insulated windows... so the HVAC savings offset the extra costs of the windows and made the economic payback more favorable.
