Houston Texans Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson didn’t do too much denying when asked about Nevin Shapiro’s accusations, but he didn’t admit to anything either.
Johnson doesn’t really get into any trouble on or off the field (except for this little fight) so he’ll probably get the benefit of doubt. That doesn’t mean he didn’t do anything wrong though.
Shapiro’s been called a crab in a bucket and Johnson echoes those thoughts:
“The guy’s in trouble, and he’s trying to take everybody down with him,” Johnson said. “I’m really not worried about it.”
Whatever happened went down over eight years ago, I wouldn’t be worried about it either. Johnson likely doesn’t have to worry about any retoactive punishment, but he certainly doesn’t want to be associated with a convicted felon.
When asked specifically about receiving VIP treatment at clubs, Johnson’s memory got fuzzy:
“Really? I wasn’t in the clubs too much when I was in college. I don’t know about that.”
Then, Johnson ended the vague question answering session with this:
“You kinda get upset about it,” he said. “At the same time, you really can’t control what anyone else says. He knows and I know what really happened. It’s over, it’s done with, and the NCAA is handling it and we’ll just move on.” -Source
I think it’s safe to say he was involved, but not many people are going to judge him for it. We all wish we had a guy splurging on us during our college days funding all of our “extracurricular activities.”
It just so happens that if you play big-time college sports in this country, that wish can come true for you one day.
I’m not going to pass judgement on these players because you better believe I would have gladly accepted the same perks.
