Oscar Winner and Screenwriter of Pulp Fiction Gets Jail Sentence

September 30, 2009 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports the Oscar winning screen writer of films like Pulp Fiction and Beowulf received a jail sentence in a deadly DUI crash in January 2008.

Roger Avary, famed screenwriter was driving a Mercedes sedan at the time of the crash and according to police was driving at over 100 miles per hour. Prosecutor Michael Lief stated that at the time of the collision Avary age 44 had a blood alcohol level that was over the legal limit and had passenger Andreas Zini age 34 and Avary’s wife Ojai in the vehicle.

Zini was killed in the collision on January 13th, and this led to Avary being charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, along with other charges. He pled not guilty in a Ventura County courthouse and later changed his plea to guilty on all charges in August.

Avary was sentenced to 365 days in jail and given five years probation, according to prosecutor Lief in the death of Zini a resident of Italy, who had been visiting Avary on his honeymoon.

According to investigators Avary, his wife, Zini and his wife were on their way to Avary’s residence when he was speeding, driving under the influence and struck a telephone pole.

Zini’s widow and parents traveled from Italy to attend the trial and hear the sentencing. Zini’s widow had been in another vehicle the night Avary struck the pole in his Mercedes.

According to Avary’s attorney he changed his plea in order to get the case over with and move on with his life, and he has also settled a civil suit agreement he reached with Zini’s family for $4.1 million dollars.
