He began college studying to be a Moravian preacher, but changed his major to music. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a bachelor's degree in music in 1949. While at UNC, he was president of the UNC Men's Glee Club and was a member of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, America's oldest fraternity for men in music. Volunteers from Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark program refurbish site in time for annual Mayberry Days

McLean, VA., September 17, 2009 – In 1960, the first episode of The Andy Griffith Show aired, and characters like Sheriff Andy Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife won over the hearts of viewers everywhere. The fictional town of Mayberry felt like home for many. Now, fans can visit familiar Mayberry landmarks in Mount Airy, N.C., Andy Griffith's hometown, like the Old City Jail. Today volunteers from Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark program (www.hamptonlandmarks.com) will help restore this historic site. The jail is the 48th landmark refurbished in the 39th state through the Save-A-Landmark program.
More than 20 volunteers gathered from local Hampton Hotels throughout North Carolina to help preserve the site in time for the annual Mayberry Days festival. The work included general cleaning of the facility and painting. Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark program will donate $10,000 to the Old City Jail for future refurbishment efforts including renewed flooring at the site.
'The Andy Griffith Show is truly a representation of American life in the 1960s,' said Judy Christa-Cathey, vice president of global brand marketing for Hampton Hotels.
