As an art history major I had to look into this, and I see the problem, it is failed minimalism. I understand the aesthetic the designers were trying to achieve, but black and white is a cliche minimalist technique and the site does not remain black and white anyways; there are many fonts in many colors. There is visual clutter and the attempt to not create boxes around everything and reduce unnecessary elements simply left it seeming...
