Andy Williams has Bladder Cancer

Andy Williams is a superhero. The 83 year old can still turn anyone with a heart into goo by launching into Moon River. Residing in Branson, Missouri, for 20 years, Williams has been able to “stay home” while entertaining thousands upon thousands at his Moon River theater. He has repeatedly stated that he never really had any plans to retire, so he’s gonna keep entertaining. I know this…because…I grew up in Branson, Missouri. It’s true. People actually live there.

Digressing.

Mr. Williams is awesome. He always gave out the best Halloween candy, was never too busy to shake a hand, can sing Michael Buble under the table and when he made a statement about his recent cancer diagnosis, he simply stated that the rumors were true. He has bladder cancer, he is undergoing treatment and plans to be performing again once the trees start blooming in 2012. Superhero.

People who grew up watching Andy on his television show, or were simply fans…or are his friend on Facebook or follow him on Twitter, know how cool this guy is. There’s something about Williams that makes him an eternal youth.

Once upon a time I was working a stint for Nickelodeon at the Branson theme park, Silver Dollar City. Andy Williams showed up on opening day of the Children’s Festival in a white suit…to be slimed. He knew he was going to be slimed, and wanted the green to “really show up…” White jacket. Seriously. After being slimed, he dropped what became the mantra of every young buck and doe who was working the hot, humid summer: “Happy Silver Dollar City!” Didn’t make a lick of sense, but Andy Williams said it, and everyone started cheering.

Prayers and well wishes to Andy and his doctors–beat this nasty disease down!
