A community portal about Anemia with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Anemia or anaemia, from the Greek meaning "without blood", refers to a deficiency of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin. This results in a reduced ability of blood to transfer oxygen to the tissues, causing hypoxia ; since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences. Hemoglobin has to be present to ensure adequate oxygenation of all body tissues and organs.

Study confirms clot risks with anti-anemia drugs

From:  reuters.com
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Cancer patients who took drugs to cut the risk of anemia were twice as likely to develop blood clots in the lungs or legs as other patients, a decade-long study of more than 55,000 cancer patients has found. The study adds to mounting evidence that the risks of the commonly used drugs -- known as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents or ESAs -- may outweigh the benefits. ESAs stimulate bone marrow to increase the production of red blood cells. They were first approved in... Read Full Story

Anemia

Anemia is a very common blood disorder that affects mainly women of child-bearing years, although other medical conditions can cause anemia. The cause of anemia is quite easy to understand. It happens when there is a drop in the about of either hematocrit or hemoglobin in the blood. Hematocrit is the percentage of red blood cells found in a certain amount of blood, while hemoglobin is the part of the blood that takes the oxygen throughout the body. When you have a drop in either of these... Read Full Story

Anaemia

Anaemia is a condition which occurs when you have an abnormally low amount of red blood cells. Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, a red pigment which gives blood its colour. The job of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen around the body. When red blood cells and therefore haemoglobin are low the blood fails to supply the body's tissues with sufficient amounts of oxygen. As your lungs and heart will then have to work harder to get oxygen into the blood, symptoms of anaemia, such... Read Full Story

Sickle Cell Anemia Inheritance

From:  mc2blog.com
Red blood cells, the backbone of providing oxygen flow in the body, are essential in maintaining good health. Some people, however, have inherited a type of anemia that causes these red blood cells to be malfunctioning due to their defective shape, consistency and lack of abundance of them. These features cause them a premature death. The symptoms of sickle cell anemia are abundant, however, the most prevalent of these symptoms is shortness of breath and fatigue. Treatment of sickle cell... Read Full Story

Sickle Cell Disease (Genes and Disease) (Library Binding)

Description: In 1910, Dr. James B. Herrick published Western medical literature's first description of a person with sickle cell anemia.
