Once sea-turtle hatchlings hit the surf, they vanish for up to five years. Where the half-dollar-size tots spend these "lost years" while ballooning to the size of dinner plates has been a mystery, until now. New research, published today in the online edition of the journal Biology Letters, indicates the green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) hide out in the open ocean, where they feast on jellyfish and other marine creatures. Not only did the researchers spot their short-lived sea homes, but they discovered that these reptiles, thought to be lifelong vegetarians, are actually meat eaters as juveniles. Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, divisions of Sea Research Foundation, Inc., is now home to four sea turtles – Charlotte, a juvenile green sea turtle, and three loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings. If not for the black and white spots, and oh yeah, lack of trunk, you might confuse this massive cow for an elephant. But Chili, isn't meant to be this big. The British black and white Fresian bullock is about the same height as a small elephant, and weighs a little more than a ton. But Chili's size isn't a result of cow feed pumped with steroids or anything like that. His diet consists primarily of grass, and his owners at Ferne Animal Sanctuary in Somerset can't explain why he's so big.
