(emailed to the President-Elect at his official web site)
Sir,
My congratulations first of all upon winning the election. Not only on winning it, but also on winning it in such a clear and convincing manner. As a nation we needed a clean win, with no doubt as to who got the prize. My compliments too on inspiring so many to vote, to speak out after many years of apathy and disinterest. If nothing else you are to be commended for that.
I do have one word of advice, be honest. Deal with us honestly and openly. Refrain from bloviation and malarky. You will make unpopular decisions. Don’t lie to us about why you’re doing it, never try to obfuscate. Every President since George Washington has made unpopular decisions. Those who lied did poorly. Those who were open and honest about their decision fared much better. Both Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush found themselves having to raise taxes. Reagan was honest, Bush dishonest, Bush’s dishonesty hurt him and hurt him badly.
There will come a day when you are going to be unpopular, it’s a tradition in this country we’re rather proud of. Do your best to gain the reputation of honesty and probity even as everybody is dumping on you for your boneheaded errors. People will forgive more boneheaded errors from an honest man than they ever will from a liar.
Stay healthy, stay safe. Practice speaking extemporaneously, it’s a vital skill for a U. S. President. May the transition go smoothly and the family adjusts to the new digs quickly. One more thing, get a smart, people dog. A husky or malemute for example. They can be difficult to handle, but that’s because they’re smart. Treat them firmly and with respect and you should be good to go.
Good luck.
