What's Your Number? (Rated R)
Starring Anna Faris, Chris Evans, Ari Graynor
Directed by Mark Mylod
Plots: A woman realizes she's slept with twenty guys and decides it's time to find the men and see if she missed her Mr. Right.
It's the rare romantic comedy that can pull off feeling fresh and original. There only just so many ways to pull together a “girl meets boy” story line. What's Your Number? is not one of those films. It is pretty much a total cliché from start to finish. The very first scene is almost identical to one in Bridesmaids. In the scene, Anna Faris/Kristin Wiig wake up before the man they've just slept with, make themselves up, and crawl back into bed so they appear beautiful when Zachary Quinto/John Hamm wakes up next to them.
The similarities don't end there. Faris is maid of honor for her sister's wedding. Wiig was maid of honor for her best friend. Both of them have casual boyfriends who bolt when they ask them to go to the wedding. Both lose their jobs; both have artisitic passions they are not realizing.
Despite the plot similarities, the movie works – largely because Anna Faris is an old pro at the lovable ditz, and she and Chris Evans (Captain America) have fantastic chemistry together. Whether it's bouncing one-liners off of each other or sexy flirtation, they are like magnets on screen – to each other and to the audience.
Anna Faris is Ally Darling, and she's not having a good day. Her boyfriend leaves her when she asks her to go to her sisters wedding (parents might be there), and then gets fired. To top it off, she sleeps with the guy who fires her later that night. The guy is hilariously played by Joel McHale (Community) who has an odd eccentricity that keeps him from being datable material. Enter her hunky neighbor Colin (Chris Evans), who's ringing up quite a large number of partners, too.. They strike up an agreement. He'll help her track down her former beaus, and she'll let him use her apartment to hide from those embarrassing morning after conversations. From there, it's a cookie cutter rom-com made tolerable by Faris and Evans.
The rest of the cast do a fine job to round out the movie. Ari Gaynor plays Ally's sister; Blythe Danner and Ed Bagley, Jr. play her parents. Several actors have fun cameos as some of Ally's many exes including Chris Pratt and Andy Samberg.
What's Your Number? doesn't hold up to some of the stronger R-rated comedies that came out over the summer, but it will make for a fun night out with your significant other.
Dad Suitability: A decent comedy that Dad can take Mom to for a decent date night.
Kid Suitability: While a little tamer than some of the other R-rated comedies - it's still rated R.
