RIP Anne Francis: You Wore It Well

Unless you recently watched ‘Forbidden Planet’ which is based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest and stars Leslie Nielsen, you may not be aware of Anne Francis, an actress who was also in that film. Francis died in California Sunday, Jan 2, 2011 at the age of 80. If you haven’t heard of her before, keep reading and allow yourself to be influenced.

Francis and her fabled beauty spot. P-shopped better? Nyet.

Francis, a child model, radio star and all-around actress appeared in films such as the now iconic ‘Forbidden Planet’ and ‘Bad Day At Black Rock’.

She also starred in TV’s ‘The Twilight Zone’ as a show room dummy come to life. Cool. She broke new ground for women in the 1960s TV drama Honey West – a sizzlingly sexy female PI with a lipstick transmitter and a fake martooni olive as a listening device amongst her gizmos.

Francis had the figure to wear West’s amazing outfits; her character, a female private detective, also drove a great car and had an ocelot on a leash.

That sure as hell beats a chihuahua (pronounced ‘chee-hooa-hooa’) in a Gucci purse.

West also had earrings that combusted into tear gas when thrown on the floor (good thing they don’t make wedding and engagement rings with that capability) as well as a garter belt that became a gas mask. That really reminds me of this.

Honey West’s best outfits? Black snakeskin trench, white beaded sheath with sable and a tiger-print swimming costume (below) which apparently also had a cape.

Her outfits as Altaira in ‘Forbidden Planet’ were futuristically short; “I had good legs,” she said.

Rest in peace, Ms Francis. Well done.
