Russia reaches ancient Antarctic lake

By lovelysanjana99 on  From cinespice.in
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday it had pierced through Antarctica's frozen crust to a vast, subglacial lake that has lain untouched for at least 14 million years hiding what scientists believe may be unknown organisms and clues to life on other planets. Sealed deep under the ice sheet, Lake Vostok is one of the world's last unexplored frontiers. Scientists suspect its depths may reveal new life forms and a glimpse of the planet before the ice age. If life is found in the lake's...Read Full Story

NASA simulates fly through of ginormous crack in Antarctic glacier, takes you for virtual ride

By oliver18754 on  From webdev101.tk
Swooping through the trenches of the Death Star likely ranks high on every geek's bucket list, but thanks to the global financial crisis, we likely won't be seeing Dubai's Death Star any time soon. Fortunately, the folks at NASA have rigged up a passable alternative -- flying through a massive 19-mile crack across Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier. The crack was discovered last October and measures 60 yards wide and 50 yards deep, certainly more than enough clearance to accommodate adventurous...Read Full Story

Antarctica’s World of White Wonder

By Sue Lobo on  From blog.atlastravelweb.com
Approaching the Antarctic Peninsula, the crystalline monoliths of ice and great tabular bergs of the Weddell Sea become clear. A Zodiac (motorized landing craft) takes you closer to the monumental walls of ice, making it all the more amazing to know these glaciers are constantly on the move to the speedy tune of 30 centimeters per day. In the shadow of their grandeur, the local denizens frolic. Adelies, chinstrap and gentoo penguins by the hundreds, even thousands, will entertain you royally...Read Full Story

18-Mile Crack Seen by NASA in Antarctic Glacier

By kashi347 on  From hotenews.com
Antarctica is so vast that the pictures give you no sense of scale. The pencil-thin line across the satellite image of Pine Island Glacier (above) is actually more than 18 miles long, 800 feet across in places, and 180 feet deep. And it’s growing. In the next few months, scientists expect the glacier to create an iceberg about 350 square miles in area. It will probably float northward, melting as it goes. “Pine Island Glacier is losing ice very quickly, about six meters per year,” said...Read Full Story

After over 20 years of drilling through two miles of glacial ice, Russian scientists have reportedly penetrated the surface of Antarctica's largest subglacial lake. Lake Vostok, which hasn't been touched by light in millions of years, has been a target of scientific exploration because of the unique lifeforms it may contain.
