As the Detroit Lions entered the offseason, one of their most glaring holes was at the safety position. Though Louis Delmas is a young, hard-hitting option at the position, the team desperately needed a complimentary player to form a devastating tandem in the defensive backfield. They needed someone with good hands, the ability to read the offense and to excel in areas Delmas could not.  

The 2012 Detroit Lions' schedule gives the team a shot at chasing down the Green Bay Packers for a division title in the NFC North. The team has a great chance to get out to a fast start with some underperforming opponents, but a quirk in the schedule also gives them a bye in Week 5.

Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best, who missed 11 games last year after sustaining his second concussion of the season, is expected to be cleared for football contact in June, according to what Lions general manager Martin Mayhew told a radio station, the Lions' official website reported Tuesday.

The Lions’ March re-signing of RB Kevin Smith looks all the better now, with news of two marijuana-related incidents for second-year back Mikel Leshoure coming to light. Leshoure, who missed the 2011 season with an Achilles tendon injury, was arrested in Michigan on Feb. 18 and March 12 on separate marijuana possession charges. The latter charge, which is reportedly a felony, is unresolved.  

The Kevin Smith signing muddled the backfield in Detroit, and the Lions may not be done making moves, with the draft looming. Right now Smith adds to a committee that is known more for injuries than fantasy production. In 2011 Smith signed halfway into the season and led the team in rushing touchdowns with four while playing in seven games. What does that say about the Lions’ rushing attack?  

Detroit Lions defensive lineman Nick Fairley was arrested on a second-degree marijuana possession charge on Tuesday, the Press-Register in Mobile, Ala., reported. Fairley, 24, was jailed on $1,000 bail, according to records at the Mobile County Metro Jail.  

The Cleveland Browns 2012 Exhibition schedule looks pretty much exactly like it did in the 2011 season. The Browns will face off against the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. The only difference is the order in which the Browns will face off against these four teams.  

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers has been arraigned on five misdemeanors from two unrelated incidents. The 30-year-old Rogers appeared Thursday before Saginaw County District Judge A.T. Frank and pleaded not guilty to the charges. Frank released Rogers on a $7,500 personal recognizance bond.  

The Detroit Lions re-signed running back Kevin Smith to a one-year contract. Smith suffered through another injury-marred season, and received no other reported interest in free agency. Smith's effectiveness waned after he severely sprained his ankle on Thanksgiving.

Police say Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was caught chewing marijuana during a recent traffic stop in southwestern Michigan. The incident on March 12 occurred less than a month after police in a different Berrien County community say they caught Leshoure with marijuana. Prosecutor Art Cotter says Leshoure was due in court Monday for the more recent case but hadn't appeared by 4 p.m.  

Down the road, the Lions’ selection of Iowa OT Riley Reiff could be regarded as a nice value for Detroit. If nothing else, it is a case of sensible planning. OLT Jeff Backus will be 35 in September, and ORT Gosder Cherilus enters the final year of his contract. (Backus comes off an arm injury, but he's expected to be ready for training camp, according to the Detroit Free Press.)  

I was reading an article written by Dan Pompei of the National Football Post about short quarterbacks in the NFL. It caught my attention because it mentioned Detroit Lions quarterback Kellen Moore and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in the title.

COMMENTARY | Shaun Hill did what he could in Matt Stafford's absence. It wasn't great, but he managed the game while the Detroit Lions' starting franchise quarterback was sidelined for most of 2010 after suffering yet another shoulder injury.
