Of course I prefer using USB flash drives whenever possible. They’re a significant step over old conventional CD’s, with much faster booting time and ability to write data (remember, no data can be written on CD’s or CD-RW’s without the use os proper burning software). However, many computers do not support USB boot, so the need for CD’s still exists.
In a certain way, Antivirus Rescue CD is a very handy tool for repairing computers stuffed with malware. Below is a short list of advantages given by rescue CD’s.
- A Rescue CD will work fine both on a system with bootable Windows and on a computer showing nothing but black screen instead of loading desktop.
- Antivirus Rescue Discs are provided as image files which are easy to download and burn. You don’t have to pay NERO to do it, there are lots of free burning applications.
- Only latest anti-malware definitions are included with each Rescue CD image file. Yet, you don’t have to burn a rescue CD each time you need updated definitions. There’s an Update feature available from within Rescue CD interface, so computers with Internet access can grab updated definitions and use them for scanning local hard drive(s).
- Rescue CD’s are based on linux and are totally free to use.
- Antivirus scanner that comes with Rescue Disc can check partitions for malware regardless of file system.
For systems infected with viruses so that no action can be taken from within desktop environment (e.g. installed antivirus software is damaged, no software can be downloaded from the network, USB devices are blocked, etc) Rescue CD is a savior. No virus can hide or mask because all files on a hard drive are meager zeros and ones.
