Physicist Clifford Surko, University of California at San Diego, United States, plans to make “bottle” of antimatter. The bottle becomes the biggest pitfall of antimatter that can help to study antimatter.
Antimatter is the opposite of matter. Each particle of matter have antimatter partners. Because the electron positron pair have the same mass but different charge.
If matter and antimatter meet, then they kill each other. Nature makes the capture process of antimatter would be difficult. Actually, not if the trap is made of some materials, so do not necessarily trap destroyed.
Until now, scientists were able to trap antimatter during 170 milliseconds. Previously, scientists have successfully created thousands antihidrogen. For study purposes, the creation of systems capable of trap antimatter is needed most.
Bottles of antimatter that will be created Surko trap laid for the trillions of antimatter in the long run. The walls of the cylinder is made of electric and magnetic fields, making the antimatter can not work.
“We’re working to amass trillions of positrons in a trap, multicellular composition of the bottle as a hotel that had a lot of space. Each room has a tenth of a billion antiparticles,” said Surko.
Surko plan presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), February 18, 2011 last year. Besides holding more than antimatter, Surko also developing ways to compress the antimatter.
The compacted material in clusters of high density and can be used for various applications. “Some people can pull the handle of the bottle in a stream, a jet, as well as pressing the toothpaste,” said Surko.
Surko continued, “Arc of what could be a new way to learn how it reacts with matter over antimatter. This is very helpful. For example, in an effort to understand the surface characteristics of materials.”
Surko will also develop a method of cooling antiparticles. With this method, the antiparticles are made to walk more slowly with the super low temperature cooling. When he moves slow, the antimatter can be learned more easily.
Bottle portable antimatter will be developed by Surko to help scientists make antimatter lab. “If you can make a portable trap, the application will expand the use of antimatter,” said Surko.
Antimatter has been used effectively in the technology of everyday life, such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET). PET technology is used in the medical world for imaging.
During the examination, patients with radioactive substance that emits positrons dinjeksi during decomposition. Positron will be in contact with the body, eliminating any gamma rays and other issues. Ray scanner is detected and converted into images in three dimensions.
