Devils coach Pete DeBoer said defenseman Anton Volchenkov suffered ““a pretty serious cut, 10-12 stitches” on his face on the hit by Florida’s Shawn Matthias in the first period of tonight’s 4-3 loss to the Panthers.
Volchenkov was not available to the media postgame, but the Devils said Volchenkov suffered a cut to the lip and had a bloody forehead, apparently from when he hit the ice.
Ilya Kovalchuk, who immediately went after Matthias to stick up for his teammate, thought it was a hit to the head that should be looked at by the NHL.
