Apocalypto Summary: Violent and Sad
Gibson and Apocalypto actors
Mel Gibson's 2006 film Apocalypto was nowhere near the smash success of his previous endeavor, The Passion of the Christ, but it actually fared reasonably well with critics. The film was shot in the Mexican state of Veracruz on high-definition digital video.
The film follows a protagonist named Jaguar Paw who, upon attack by a raiding warrior tribe, hides his pregnant wife and son in a deep hole to keep them for being used for ritual sacrifice. He is then captured and nearly sacrificed, but a solar eclipse keeps him alive. He must then deal with being shot a whole bunch of times before he can rescue his wife and son from the pit, which is of course flooding. Jaguar Paw's wife has apparently given birth to second child during her husband's absence. The family then witnesses the arrival of Spanish conquistadors, but decides to hide from them in the jungle.
The film attempts to capture the Maya civilization in the period of its decline.
