My doctor thinks i have an appendicitis- do my symptoms match it?

Could be diverticulitis (polups on the intestinal track that can get infected, ususally by food with seeds). A friend of my had her appendix taken out only to find out she had diverticulitis and not appendicitis. Might also want to consider a kidney infection. Any blood in your urine?

By the way, CT scans are not dangerous.

First off, a CT scan isn’t dangerous. You just lay there and they scan you.

Yes your symptoms could be appendicitis. That’s one of the most routine surgeries in the world, and it can now be done with minimal invasiveness, so there are little or no scars.

If you do have appendicitis, and you don’t get the surgery, your appendix could burst and then you’ll get peritonitis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the abdomen, which IS dangerous, as in it can kill you dangerous.

Would you rather die? Untreated appendicitis can easily kill you.

Although all surgeries do carry some risk, an appendectomy isn’t particularly risky at all. It’s definitely not considered dangerous. I don’t know why you think CT scans are dangerous… the risk of a single CT is very, very VERY small. The greatest risks with a CT scan are due to the contrast dye (usually iodine) that they use. Very rarely someone will have a mild allergic reaction to it.

Please get a CT scan and get treated immediately if you have appendicitis. It can be life-threatening and is considered a medical emergency. The risks of having appendicitis are far greater and more life-threatening than the risk of a CT scan or appendectomy. Most patients make it home 1-3 days after surgery, so you’ll be home well in time for Christmas.

Think about it this way… if you have surgery before Christmas, you’ll get more presents. ;)

Take care of yourself, feel better!

CT isn’t dangerous. Let your doctor do the test. If he thinks that the symptoms match appendicitis, then they probably do. . . .

I doubt your doctor said you have appendicitis — because there are certain physical tests which your doctor can do to make it much more probable that you have appendicitis rather than a stomach virus or a bladder infection. . . and he can rule the other two out pretty easily.

A CT scan is not dangerous. It uses x-rays (radiation) to give a look at the insides of your body without having to open you up. Radiation in excessive doses can have harmful effects but a single CT scan wont affect you in any significant way, especially if you may have a serious illness or medical emergency!

A CT scan is one of the best tests to diagnose acute appendicitis as well as a host of other conditions that can cause abdominal pain.

You don’t need to go to the hospital to get the CT scan. You can get it done in an imaging center (some are in malls).

Whatever you do, dont wait. If you have a serious condition, waiting only makes it worse!

Oh, and if you live in the USA, you can get appendix surgery done at anytime regardless if it is a holiday or not(it can be life threatening). That is why doctors carry pagers.
