Ten-Year-Old's Death Confirmed Suicide

Police investigating the death of 10-year-old Aquan Lewis revealed evidence Tuesday confirming suspicions that he had killed himself in a grade-school bathroom.

The boy's mother, Angel Lewis, had called it "impossible" that the fifth-grader would commit suicide. But Cmdr. Tom Guenther, who called the boy "unhappy," said the Aquan's footprint was found on the toilet seat beneath the hook where he was found hanging on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Aquan was last seen alive on his way to gym class the morning of the third. Oakton Elementary janitor Elliott Lieteau said he found Lewis on the bathroom floor after others had removed him from the hook. Lieteau attempted CPR on the boy, but he was already dead.

Suicides among children as young as Aquan are extremely rare, but not unheard of. Boston.com gave a rundown of the stats:
There were on average just 10 U.S. suicides among 10-year-olds a year between 1999 and 2005, according to statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. By comparison, there were an average of about 75 suicides a year among 13-year-olds, and about 250 a year among 16-year-olds.
