Arctic Monkeys Release A Music Video For 'Black Treacle'

Arctic Monkeys have just released the music video for Black Treacle, the fourth single to come off their latest album Suck It And See.

Shot in California, the clip begins with a scene from a car travelling on the highway with the early-morning sun gleaming across a rural area. The mountains in the distance provide the perfect backdrop for what looks like a peaceful introduction. However, in sharp contrast, the next shot begins with life in a cell in prison, and rapidly changes to life on the run as the prisoner breaks free. Running as quickly as possible, the convict is a marked man in his orange overalls. He constantly looks over shoulder, ever hopeful that he can escape. Under, what looks like a pre-arranged spot, a large rock is moved and a knife is retrieved. All the while, scenes of a young brunette lady dressed in a wedding outfit, running in the same area, are mixed with the escaping prisoner story.

To complicate things, the camera returns to the prison cell showing more scenes of the unpleasant life behind bars. The video also goes into a hospital where a man dressed in a suit and tie is being treated in a casualty room. More unrelated scenes show a Cadillac being driven, and when parked, a young lady dressed in a tight body-hugging outfit drapes herself suggestively over the car.

The prisoner on-the-run wielding his knife, encounters a man about to get into his car. The next shot shows the con in an exchange of clothes driving the car away.

The ending is "open ended", and we are left wondering what might happen.

The story is obscure, begging one to replay the clip many times to connect the many subtle hints throughout.

Arctic Monkeys are currently touring Australia. They will then gear up again in the US for Coachella in April, followed by support to the Black Keys US tour.
