Dictatorial Punishment
Isabel Peron, former President/Dictator of Argentina, is under house arrest in Madrid, where an extradition request to Argentina, where she would be tried for human right abuses under her rule, is pending at the Spanish Courts. She served as Vice President during her husband, Juan Peron’s rule, and was removed after a bloodless coup after only twenty months of serving as President, upon his husband’s death. Under the Perons’ rule, Argentina saw some of its bloodiest years, as Juan Peron waged his “Dirty War” against dissidents and political opponents. As I have said before on other occassions, handing Peron back to the Argentinians to try would only undermind the crimes in which she has committed; giving the trial and verdict the scrutiny from the eyes of history that it does not deserve. Leave it to the Hague.

Isabel and Juan Peron
2006 was a sad year for human rights, as many dictators of the past was captured but managed to escape the jaws of justice - with many still holding on to power and terrorizing its citizens. What with the death of Milosevic, Pinochet, Niyazov (Turkmenistani dictator)… and the rushed execution of Saddam Hussein. The bloodless, thankfully, coup d’etats in Fiji and Thailand - which still hasn’t quite settled down.
Here is a list of the top ten dictators that are still in power that you would find rather interesting: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/96159/top_10_dictators_of_2006.html
