Aromatherapy works from the premise that scent affects mood, and the more concentrated the scent, the more effective. The practice often employs essential oils. Sandalwood, peppermint, bergamot and many others are distilled from their respective plants until reaching the essential oil. The oil can then be burned like incense or inhaled from the bottle.

Part of the practice is discovering what effects each scent has -- does it inspire, encourage intuition, calm, energize?

Because the effects are subtle and vary from person to person, the science benefits from lot of dialogue between practitioners.

Using essential oils and other helpful compounds extracted from plants and flowers is known as aromatherapy. Oils and chemicals can be harvested from plants by one of several extraction methods, these methods can be used to get a wide variety of different compounds. Active organic compounds can either be used alone in with other compounds.

Massage therapists and in expanding numbers doctors then utilize the oil for a range of advantages including stress relief and pain management effects. Organic oils can be delivered many ways depending on the particular aromatherapy uses. Commonly used herbs utilized for aromatherapy include lavender, patchouli, geranium, and bergamot.

Aromatherapy uses the byproducts of herbs for health and other advantages. There are many types of materials removed from herbs in addition to natural herbal chemicals such as absolutes, phytoncides, herbal distillates, infusions, and carrier chemicals. Natural herbal chemicals are normally extracted by the method of steam distillation although can also describe oils created from solvent removal.

Absolutes describes oils removed from aromatic plants by solvent extraction. Phytoncides are volatile compounds that are used for their ability to destroy microbes. Herbal distillates are watery by products of the distillation process such as rose water. Infusions is the term describing aqueous extracts of natural flower material. Carrier oils are additives used to dilute the concentration of organic chemicals for topical utilization.

Aromatherapy has many uses. It has for a long time been utilized by doctors as a means to aid relaxation. Lately there has been significant study about the health benefits of aromatherapy.

Medical professionals, particularly in Asia and France, are having success with organic oils in clinical settings. France especially, where a number of clinical aromatherapy findings have been achieved, has made exceptional use of the treatment.

There is laboratory proof for performance in many areas such as as an antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, anti inflammatory, and antispasmodic. There are a few methods for application of organic compounds for effective use; aerial diffusion, direct inhalation, and on the skin.
