Arsène Wenger backs Arsenal to cope with decisive fixtures

Arsène Wenger believes Arsenal have the “mental strength” to cope with a demanding seven days which could define the Gunners’ season.

The London side travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, followed by a trip to the San Siro to face AC Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League midweek, before repeating the journey north to take on the Black Cats in the FA Cup fifth round next weekend.

And Wenger is confident Arsenal have learnt lessons from last season which saw the Gunners lose the Carling Cup final to Birmingham City, and suffer premature exits in Europe and the FA Cup in the space of a fortnight.

“We go into a period that will decide our season,” Wenger told the club’s website. “I think it is that important because in one week we play three games in three different competitions.

“In every single competition we are, of course, in a position where we want to win our games.

“It did not come off [last season] because one big disappointment can have a consequence on the next one.

“It makes me confident [this time] because I feel the team has the mental strength and a fantastic attitude on a daily basis. And from what we have learned from last year.”
