A community portal about Art Deco with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Art Deco was a popular design movement from 1910 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and film. This movement was, in a sense, an amalgamation of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Constructionism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity apexed during the 1920s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, functional, ultra modern.

New Challenge Theme: Art Deco

Entries for the EBW Team June Midsummer Nights Dream Challenge are due the 5th and Staci of Pink Pooch Designs has announced the July Challenge Theme: Art Deco!

So inspired! I'm a huge fan of Alphonse Mucha and the Art Nouveau movement he popularized. Art Deco is about as close as you can get without actually being Art Nouveau. Both movements were decorative, without much in the way of political or social intentions (though the same can't be said for Mucha himself).
Art Deco took root around the turn of the 20th century and peaked in the 1920's. It took fluid Art Nouveau and sharpened it up with Cubism, Modernism and Futurism. What I like about the movement was that it was also influenced by Primitivism. The art of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Aztec Mexico was all incorporated into this elegant, dynamic, colorful movement. My favorite part of Art Deco is Egyptian Revivalism.
So, that's what I'd like to explore in my piece and I may use this cool little scarab I found on my own Egyptian adventure!
