Patchwork as complex as Americana.
A quilt is never just a quilt. It’s like Winona said in How to Make an American Quilt: “Young lovers seek perfection. Old lovers learn the art of sewing shreds together and of seeing beauty in a multiplicity of patches.”
In the mid-1990s, the United States economy was well into an economic expansion, doing so well that the Federal Reserve had to engineer a “soft landing” the previous year to slow it down. Had Noni been quilting in the late 2000s, however...Read Full Story
About a year ago I started a beginner quilt and used it as a basis for a series of articles on beginner quilting. I beavered away happily until I had quilted it and then I came to a stop. It remained unbound for months and months and then this week I suddenly decided to finish it. You can see the results on
quilt binding and I am so glad that I can finally move that quilt from the UFO pile! I daren't count to see how many more quilts are still in that pile.I've been asked several times...Read Full Story
BINDING QUILTS WITH SCALLOPS
Do you ever feel that you want to do something different with your quilt binding? I tend to be very boring and use the same method of binding - 2.1/2" folded double binding - again and again. Recently I was asked for instructions for binding quilts with scallops and I am so pleased that I tried it out: it gave something really different to my quilt. The construction of the quilt...Read Full Story
Star Crossed Nine Patch is made with two blocks, a pinwheel and a nine patch, both surrounded by no-waste Flying Geese, although the geese point in different directions from block to block. You can choose fabrics in colors and values similar to mine, or change the focus entirely by playing around with both of those elements. The quilt finishes at about 60" x 84" and is pretty easy to assemble.
