The "At Last" singer was surrounded by her husband Artis Mills and sons, Donto and Sametto, were at her side when she passed away this morning.
James won six Grammys during her career and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. She had a successful music career for many decades, but also had a sometimes dark personal life.
She struggled with a heroin addiction and the fallout in the '70s, and bounced in and out of rehab facilities for years. She married Artis Mills in 1969, and he took the fall and served 10 years in prison when both were arrested for heroin possession in the early '70s. James instead served time in a drug treatment facility.
Little else is known about Mills, who let his gal have the spotlight throughout their relationship. However, there was a squabble between Mills and her two sons for control of the singer's estate. A deal was eventually struck, leaving Mills as the conservator and capping James' expenses at $350,000.
