The three most popular types of dry mount adhesives are, (1) a porous paper carrier coated on the both sides with a permanent adhesive, (2) a porous paper carrier coated on both sides with a low temp, acid free, chemically inert, dry polymer adhesive, and (3) a low temp, dry polymer film, that is pure adhesive, with no paper carrier.
Bienfangs’s Color Mount and Drytac’s Tri Mount, are two of the most often used paper carrier dry mount adhesives. Both are microscopically porous, so captured air bubbles are not a problem. It’s this breath-ability, that makes either one of these tissues easy to use. Both can be used in the newer roller press, or the old stand by mechanical press. Both are manufactured with the highest quality materials for a highly successful results. Both are relatively low cost items, and they are both readily available. They are both excellent for mounting posters, commercial prints, Resin Coated (RC) Photos, blueprints, offset litho, and many other types of prints and papers.
The safest, but slightly more expensive type of dry mount tissue is Bienfang’s Buffer Mount, and Drytac’s Drychival Mount tissues. These are made of a paper carrier coated on both sides with an acid free, neutral ph, stable and insert low melt dry polymer adhesive, that melts when its heated, dries when its cooled, and is reversible when its heated again. Both are manufactured with the highest quality materials for highly successful results, both are readily available, low cost items, and both are excellent for mounting for delicate material such as photos, sheep skin, rice paper, tissue, or silk.
The best adhesives to use in the dry mount press are Bienfang’s Fusion 4000 and Drytac’s Flobond. Both of these items are pure adhesive, no paper carrier. These adhesives work around free form shapes, the excess simply shrivels up and disappears. Fusion and Flobond can be can be butted together or overlapped with no effect on the surface of the mounted item. This is a good economy, considering the slightly higher cost of these items. They are acid free, they activate at low temperatures, and they don’t need a long dwell time under the heat and pressure of the press. They are great for all photographs, newsprint, lithographs, canvas, engravings, silks, prints, and more delicate papers such as rice paper and tissue paper.
M&M; Distributors recommends Bienfang and Drytac adhesives because they are manufactured with consistently high quality, and come with easy clear instructions for use in an area of picture framing that usually presents challenges.
