The city is named after the first king Willem van Oranje-Nassau (William of Orange-Nassau) – the first heir to the Dutch House of Orange. The name was given to the city in the 1820s, when the interest in Aruba increased due to the discovery of (alluvial) gold deposits.
Dutch colonial architecture is less visible than the neighboring island of Curacao, but several modern recreations is also born outside the Royal Plaza shopping mall, and very few buildings along Main Street and Main Square. Due to increased public interest in maintaining the cultural heritage of the island, a number of old buildings and houses have become the center of colorfully restored landmarks, such as lime-colored Wilhelminastraat Civil Registry.
