A few Notes on today’s news coverage:
- Funnye, You Don’t Look Jewish: It seems that not all inner-city Chicago preachers are cut from the same cloth. On the heels of the controversy surrounding Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his anti-America diatribes, the New York Times did a feature on Capers Funnye, a black rabbi, who also has his congregation in Chicago. Funnye’s congregation is all about inclusion and he has persoanlly called out Louis Farrakhan for his anti-semitism.
- The leading story of the day is the opening of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Major newspapers devoted a minimum of four pages of coverage. Think about it. When was the last time everyone at the office was hanging around the water cooler talking about the latest from Darfur? OK, I follow the NCAA tournament as much as anyone else, but geez… sometimes we need to get our priorities in order.
- Elliott Spitzer: Actually Spitzer isn’t really the story any more. News of a politician unable to keep it in his pants becomes yesterday’s news very quickly. The real story is that Superstar Call Girl Ashley Alexandra Dupree was offered $1 million to be filmed for Girls Gone Wild. Before she could collect the cash, someone at GGW found 2003 footage of Dupree already baring all. Turns out she was only 17 at the time. Joe Francis, GGW’s founder pulled the offer off of the table and came up with this memorable quote “It’s kind of like finding a winning lottery ticket in the cushions of your couch,” Francis said. Don’t feel too bad for Ms. Dupree. A $1 million offer is still on the table from Hustler publisher Larry Flynt. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/03/19/2008-03-19_spitzer_girl_ashley_alexandra_dupre_17_a.html
- Buried below the Girls Gone Wild headlines was a story regarding Spitzer’s replacement, Governor David Paterson. Paterson, you may recall, pre-emptively admitted to several affairs (as did New York’s new first lady). It turns out that Paterson apparently billed his campaign committee for some of the costs of entertaining his various “friends.” One particular bill, from New York City’s Quality Hotel, came to $103.87. The expense came under the listing “constituent services.”
