Gator Football Player Accused of Using Dead Woman's Credit Card

When Ashley Slonina died tragically in a motorcycle accident last October, no one thought her name would return to headlines, when a Gators football player allegedly used her credit card for personal purchases.

Gators safety Jamar Hornsby turned himself into authorities Friday on charges that he allegedly used Slonina's credit card. The 21-year-old sophomore is facing third-degree felony charges of fraudulent use of a credit card, for more than $100, and a misdemeanor charge of credit chard theft.

It is unknown how Hornsby obtained the card, but a spokesman for Alachua County Sherriff’s Office said the card was used 33 times in the county, 37 times in Jacksonville where Hornsby is from and the charges totaled around $3,000.

Charges on the card started October 13, 2007, the day after Slonina's death. A warrant was issued for Hornsby’s arrest Thursday, and his attorney Huntley Johnson said his client would cooperate with authorities.

After being booked, Hornsby was released on his own recognizance. Judge William E. Davis said he was released without paying a bond because any money that would've gone towards his release would be money he wouldn't be able to return to Slonina's family.

Slonina was the girlfriend of a Florida Gator player. She had taken a ride home from another member of the team, Michael Guilford, when the motorcycle hit a curb at high speed, killing both students in October of 2007.

Hornsby has a history of problems of the field. In April 2007, he was cited on a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge, after causing $750 in damage to a car by throwing a man onto the car's hood in a fight. He was also suspended form playing in a game last year after being caught selling his tickets to the game, a violation of NCAA rules.
