Schlesinger Jr., the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and "court philosopher" of the Kennedy administration. I haven't been able to collect over 7,000 ashtrays all by myself. I have a pack of ashtray hounds who are always on the lookout for me. Some do it for praise, others for barter, and one actually steals them for me. I don't condone her method but I do applaud her for it. Downtown Iowa City will feel a little bit different Tuesday. The ashtrays and nicotine haze that permeate many area establishments will soon disappear because the Smokefree Air Act, which bans smoking statewide in restaurants and bars, goes into effect that day.

HARRISBURG (AP)— Gov. Ed Rendell has signed a statewide smoking ban into law, giving ashtrays the boot from break rooms and restaurants in 90 days. Under the new law, most private businesses and public spaces must be smokefree. Rendell advocated such a ban as a way to cut health care costs.
