A community portal about Asthma with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Asthma is a chronic disease of the respiratory system in which the airway occasionally constricts, becomes inflamed, and is lined with excessive amounts of mucus, often in response to one or more triggers. These acute episodes may be triggered by such things as exposure to an environmental stimulant, cold air, exercise or exertion, or emotional stress. In children, the most common triggers are viral illnesses such as those that cause the common cold. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators. Between episodes, most patients feel fine.

Asthma and Exhaled Nitric Oxide (eNO) - A Simple, New Breath Test to Help Manage Asthma

When airways get inflamed, the inner walls of the airway swell, so there is less space for a smooth flow of air. Inflammation of the airways leads symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. The primary focus of asthma treatment is to reduce inflammation. Unfortunately, current methods of testing lung function do not measure inflammation. Therefore, you have to correlate symptoms to disease severity when prescribing or adjusting medication. LONDON (Reuters) - A common asthma reliever drug may increase the risk of asthma attacks in some sufferers, British scientists said on Tuesday. "This is a global question that needs to be addressed," Professor Somnath Mukhopadhyay from Brighton... Read Full Story

Asthma Rescue Medication: Albuterol

Albuterol, also known as salbutamol, is one of the many bronchodilators used for inhalers and nebulizers. Bronchodilators such as albuterol work by relaxing the airways. These substances, as the name implies, “dilate the bronchi”; in laymen terms, to widen the airways. Widening the airways relieves the patient getting an asthma attack. This is because asthma narrows the bronchi or airways. Inhalers are used by asthmatics for preventing and relieving an asthma attack. Inhalers operate by... Read Full Story
