Found this article interesting. It's about the discovery of a new type of black hole. It's not one of those rinky-dink "only as big as a few suns black holes." And it's not one of the super-collosal black holes that scientists have yet to understand how they form. No - this one comes in medium. Not to big, not to small. Scientists hope this new black hole discovery will help them understand how the big boys are created. I'm just glad I can finally get my black holes in a "medium." New Medium... Read Full Story

We already knew that the planet Jupiter was hit by a comet the other day. What we did NOT know, however, was that this comet smashed a hole in Jupiter…and that hole is about the size of the planet Earth!
What’s even more impressive is that this hole was discovered by an amateur astronomer.
Australian Anthony Wesley was using a home-made telescope in the yard of his home in Murrumbateman, near Canberra, when he noticed that a dark scar had suddenly appeared on the side... Read Full Story
Astronomers say that the planet Jupiter has likely been struck by a comet.
Pictures taken early on Monday morning by NASA ’s Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii reveal a dark scar in Jupiter’s atmosphere near the south pole of the planet.
The images also show bright upwelling particles in the atmosphere, detected in near-infrared wavelengths.
“We were extremely lucky to be seeing Jupiter at exactly the right time, the right hour,
the right side of Jupiter to witness... Read Full Story

If youre wondering what the LHC might do for you, hows this: it might just find a whole quarter of the universe. The collider is hoping to create some particles of what physicists call dark matter, an enigma that is thought to make up roughly 25 per cent of the universe. Then there is the dark energy, a mysterious force that seems to be ripping space and time apart. In total, a whopping 96 per cent of the universe has gone AWOL. Unless, that is, weve got our maths all wrong. Watch this space... Read Full Story
There could be nearly 38,000 intelligent civilisations in our galaxy - and some of them could be trying to contact us even as you read this, British scientists say.
If that sounds too far-fetched, rest assured that there are at least 361 such civilisations out there, say scientists from Scotland.
Be warned though - these Extra Terrestrials are likely to be clever than you.
Researchers collated data from the 330 planets known to man and worked out what proportion would be... Read Full Story
A delightful display of planets and the moon will occur on New Year's Eve for anyone wishing to step outside and look up just after sunset. Venus, brighter than all other planets and stars, will dangle just below the thin crescent moon in the southwestern sky. It'll be visible -- impossible to miss, in fact -- just as the sun goes down, assuming skies are cloud-free. Soon thereafter, Mercury and Jupiter will show up hugging the south-southwestern horizon (just above where the sun went down... Read Full Story
