Are we at the ground floor of the end of religion and the start of a dominant secular society? Although the decline of belief in America is evident, the country still remains largely religious. 80% of Americans believe in a personal god. I see small glimpses of true secularism and atheistic movements chipping away at religious institutions and thought. We can see what the future of a true secular and atheist society will look like by observing the leaders, social media, and local...Read Full Story
Image via Wikipedia I started to write this post in the Atheist Defense Network group at Atheist Nexus but decided to post it here instead. Do you ever feel thoroughly overwhelmed with how much work we atheists have before us with regard to anti-atheist bigotry ? That's how I am feeling at the moment. I'm sure it will pass, but I cannot help feeling a bit discouraged as I think back over 2008 and even what I've seen so far in 2009. While finishing a recent post about Tyson, the Indiana...Read Full Story
Image via Wikipedia I have a feeling I'll be in a very small minority with this post, but here goes. This is probably not what you were expecting from me, particularly with my known distaste for anti-atheist bigotry and past efforts opposing it. No need to worry. I have not lost my mind (although if I did, I might not realize it), and I remain steadfast in my opposition to bigotry, including anti-atheist bigotry. It is just that in the case of Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart of Florida's 2nd...Read Full Story
Image via Wikipedia The role of many branches of the Christian church in passing Proposition 8 in California and Obama's selection of Rick Warren to give the invocation at his presidential inauguration suggest that an alliance between the atheist and GLBT communities might be worthy of serious consideration. We have a great deal in common . We also share a common "enemy" in Christian extremists, a group determined to treat us as second-class citizens with restricted civil rights. In this post...Read Full Story
Image via Wikipedia Now that we know that those in Elizabeth Dole's campaign responsible for the attack ads attempting to link Kay Hagan with atheism are not even a little remorseful for their tactics, we should be ready to respond even more forcefully the next time this tactic is used. And I continue to predict that there will be a next time . The price for resorting to such bigotry in a political campaign must be made higher if it is to be abandoned. And for those still not convinced that...Read Full Story
It's not that unusual to find religious theists accusing atheists of being at the root of everything bad in the world. Randolph Boyer fits in quite well with this phenomenon. A theist who describes himself as "obsessed with messianic prophecy," he's convinced that atheists are causing the downfall of all society. He also thinks knowledge is at the root of all evil. Maybe we should be flattered by the association?

Atheism as a label does not mean anything beyond "I do not believe in god." Sam Harris, in explaining the true meaning of Atheism, said, “In fact, ’atheism‘ is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a ...
The Real Time host brings Mitt Romney's father-in-law back to the realm of the dead atheist.

Atheism is a religion like abstinence is a sex position.
It gets worse in US election years, many people spew rhetoric which includes making up new definitions for established words or concepts. The idea is to get under ones skin. I find it funny when theists claim atheism is a religion. First, unless it ...
"A report from the Pew Research Center last November showed that 53 per cent of Americans say it is necessary to believe in God to be moral. That is one reason why many are afraid of coming out, to the extent that both American Atheists and the American Humanist Association (AHA) will, on request, send mailings to members under plain covers."
I guess that by virtue of me blogging about atheism, some religious people believe I want to either convert them or educate them about atheism. I don’t.I’m not an atheist ambassador. I’m not an atheist apologist. I’m not an atheist evangelist. ...
Last spring, I wrote a somewhat tongue-in-cheek article asking whether atheism had become a religion. Fifteen hundred (mostly) angry comments later, I realized few saw the humor. My primary goal in that post actually wasn't to convince anyone that atheism ...
