Image via Wikipedia I started to write this post in the Atheist Defense Network group at Atheist Nexus but decided to post it here instead. Do you ever feel thoroughly overwhelmed with how much work we atheists have before us with regard to anti-atheist bigotry ? That's how I am feeling at the moment. I'm sure it will pass, but I cannot help feeling a bit discouraged as I think back over 2008 and even what I've seen so far in 2009. While finishing a recent post about Tyson, the Indiana library patron who is being retaliated against simply for questioning the appropriateness of ... Read Full Story

Image via Wikipedia I have a feeling I'll be in a very small minority with this post, but here goes. This is probably not what you were expecting from me, particularly with my known distaste for anti-atheist bigotry and past efforts opposing it. No need to worry. I have not lost my mind (although if I did, I might not realize it), and I remain steadfast in my opposition to bigotry, including anti-atheist bigotry. It is just that in the case of Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart of Florida's 2nd District, I'm not so sure that we are witnessing bigotry. Rep. Diaz-Balart, the former Democrat who ... Read Full Story

Image via Wikipedia Now that we know that those in Elizabeth Dole's campaign responsible for the attack ads attempting to link Kay Hagan with atheism are not even a little remorseful for their tactics, we should be ready to respond even more forcefully the next time this tactic is used. And I continue to predict that there will be a next time . The price for resorting to such bigotry in a political campaign must be made higher if it is to be abandoned. And for those still not convinced that Dole's tactics were bigoted, Bligbi's post offers a good explanation. Subscribe to Atheist ... Read Full Story

Image by shadrachian via Flickr The anti-atheist bigotry utilized by Senator Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) during her recent campaign is inexcusable. I have joined countless atheist bloggers in expressing outrage that such bigotry is tolerated in modern America. The challenge for us now, even after Dole lost the election, is one of recognizing that this may be a political tactic of which we will see more examples in future campaigns. It is time to seriously rethink our lack of organization and the political power we sacrifice by refusing to come together. Nobody is going to end anti-atheist bigotry for us; it is our struggle and ... Read Full Story

Image via Wikipedia The role of many branches of the Christian church in passing Proposition 8 in California and Obama's selection of Rick Warren to give the invocation at his presidential inauguration suggest that an alliance between the atheist and GLBT communities might be worthy of serious consideration. We have a great deal in common . We also share a common "enemy" in Christian extremists, a group determined to treat us as second-class citizens with restricted civil rights. In this post, I'd like to address what I perceive as the two primary obstacles to such an alliance. At the outset, let me be clear ... Read Full Story

I see a lot of misunderstandings and errors about atheism and atheists all over the net. People don't understand what atheism is, what the definition of atheism is, or the difference between atheism and agnosticism. People claim that atheism is a religion, that it requires faith, that it's a form of denial, that there are no real atheists, and that there are no atheists in foxholes. This introduction to atheism answers most of the most common...

BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSISby Meg WhiteThere's an internal and external fight over the direction of atheism. That the conflict between so-called "new atheism" and standard-bearers of the movement was a topic of discussion at the Atheist Alliance International annual convention is no surprise. But why were "high-profile defendants of faith convened" at Brigham Young University last month in search of a response to new atheism? To get an idea of what...

The website Atheism Exposed claims that religion is under attack and that an all out counterinsurgency campaign is needed to defend the godly: Militant atheism should concern all believers. It is a form of fanaticism on a par with extreme religious movements. Like religious extremism it is characterized by intensity and arrogance. Like religious extremism it tears at, and ridicules opposite viewpoints. It is often aggressive, disrespectful...

As atheist books, bus ads, and other popularizing measures make more inroads in the broader culture, it should be expected that push-back from religious theists will also increase. Popularizing atheism is a threat to religious theists -- even to liberals and moderates -- because it declares unequivocally that a person can live a good, decent, fulfilling life without religious beliefs and without gods. Since atheists aren't perfect, it should...

C.S. Lewis is often described as an "apostle" to the skeptics - that he somehow has a special affinity for the arguments, sensibilities, and perspectives of religious doubters and can therefore more easily reach them than other apologists. Lewis was himself an atheist for many years, after all, so it's understandable why this would make sense.   Read Article: C.S. Lewis vs. Atheism and Atheists: Why Does Lewis Ridicule Atheists?C.S.
