Alberto Gonzales has officially resigned from his post at the Department of Justice, amid scandals associated with the firing of several justices. Alberto Gonzales is accused of lying under oath to Congress about the political and partisan implications of his actions. Many people within the congress and justic department believe that Gonzales ignored the law and constitutional responsibilities in order to give the Bush Administration more power. Alberto Gonzales was the nation's 80th Attorney General.

1/18 GOPers Beg Bush to Show Real Leadership, & Bush Atty Gen. Loses It

Bush Paints a Rosy Picture of the Monster He Created

2006: Different branches of the U.S. government paint different pictures of life in Iraq. Today the U.K. newspaper ‘The Guardian’ quotes a document from the U.S. agency USAID, which warns that “social breakdown” in Iraq has allowed “criminal elements … almost free rein”. Sounds bleak, but also today President Bush paints a very different picture, saying Iraq is “a society that is beginning to understand the fruits of democracy and freedom”. A week before Bush said, “much of life is normal in Iraq. And you talk to people who go there and they come back and tell you that the change is significant and palpable; people can see the difference; there’s vibrancy“. While USAID states that fighters from the outside, including al Qaeda in Iraq “are gaining in number and notoriety” the Pentagon is saying that this later organization is in “disarray”.

It Takes a Thousand Steps to Screw up a Nation — Learn How Bush Did It

He’s been bad, bad, very bad. Remind yourself, and remind your kids (when they are old enough), just how bad. Consider a purchase of the 2009 calendar, “Poor George’s Almanac”. Rep. Barney Frank (profiled recently on “60 MINUTES“) says of it: “I’m impressed”. You will be too! Click–> HERE <– to read why, and to view sample pages. All author profits, up to $10,000 will support the non-profit ‘Action Against Hunger’ (almost 90% of funds raised by this charity help those in need, an excellent record).

Republicans Want Leadership from Bush

2006: Five former Republican heads of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and one former Democratic EPA administrator, meet today. The former EPA leaders said that the Bush administration is not doing enough on the issue of global warming. “We need leadership, and I don’t think we’re getting it” said Russell Train who served in the Nixon and Ford administrations. “To sit back and just push it away and say we’ll deal with it sometime down the road is dishonest to the people and self-destructive” Train added.

Atty General’s Bizarre Argument to Limit Citizens’ Rights

2007: Testifying to the US Senate today, Attorney General Gonzales makes an incredibly bizarre assertion about habeas corpus rights. Said Gonzales “There is no expressed grant of habeas in the Constitution; there’s a prohibition against taking it away”. Sen. Arlen Specter responded, “The Constitution says you can’t take it away except in case of rebellion or invasion. Doesn’t that mean you have the right” in other situations? Specter speculated that Gonzales’ argument “may be … violating common sense”.

Such poor reasoning might shed some light on Gonzales’ post-Bush-years job search. The New York Times reported in April 2008 that associates of the then ex-Attorney General have said that Gonzales has had no luck in getting hired by law firms he has approached. Typically, a former United States Attorney General would have no problem finding work.

Bush Admin Misstep Puts U.S. Satellite Assets at Risk

2007: China succeeds today in a test of its ability to destroy satellites in space. This is bad news for the U.S., as space based technologies, such as GPS aware weapons, communications, spy satellites, etc, represent a significant U.S. military asset. China’s ability to knock these out could represent a serious threat. Today’s action by China exposes the Bush administration’s folly in rejecting attempts to negotiate a ban on space weapons. The lack of such a ban allowed China to perform today’s successful test.
